Chapter Twenty-Two

“Look at this,” Kaia said when I came down to breakfast on Monday morning. She held out her phone and played a clip of my grandmother and Arlo Majors performing their little dance number at the audition.

“Oh, wow,” I said. “Where did you find that?”

“It’s on social media,” my mother said. She handed me a plate for the pan of cheese eggs she’d whipped up. There was also a bowl of cut melon and strawberries sitting in the middle of the table.

“Thank you,” I told my mother. “I promise I didn’t move back home for the food, but it’s really starting to be a perk.”

My mother rumpled my hair before peering over Kaia’s shoulder. “Is that really how many people have watched that since Friday?”

Kaia nodded, drumming her neon-painted fingernails against the table. “You know, you guys were making fun of the idea the other night, but it really wouldn’t be a terrible idea for Gigi to do some social media. She’s bored at the home and doesn’t want to do the play because it’s such a small stage but—”

“Gigi doesn’t want to do the play because she’s starting to forget things.” My father walked in and poured himself a cup of coffee. “She’d never admit that’s the reason, but I’ve seen her lose her train of thought a few times in the middle of a sentence lately, and she’s embarrassed. If that happened onstage, she would not handle it well.”

“With social media, she can control her content,” Kaia said. “Little film clips, quick live performances . . . I think she’d love it.”

“Mention it to her.” I bit into a strawberry. “You could be her social media manager as part of your summer duties. You only have a few more days of classes—are you excited?”

“I’m excited to get started at the theater.” Kaia played the video again and grinned. “Do you think I’ll get to meet Arlo Majors?”

I nearly choked. It hadn’t even occurred to me that she would be around him. He would be kind to her, I knew that, but I didn’t want her to pick up on my attraction to him, especially after how she reacted to that picture in the paper.

“I met him,” my mother said. “He’s such a nice guy. Beautiful blue eyes.”

My father grunted. “Blue eyes are your thing now?”

“I never said that.” My mother considered my father’s brown eyes. “Come to mention it, maybe they are.”

I winced. “Mom.”

“Time for the bus,” Kaia said and took her plates to the sink.

I got up too. “I’ll give you a ride to school. I don’t have to be in quite yet.”

Outside, the sun was bright, and the mist looked pretty settled over the woods. My father had cut down the scorched trees and planted saplings in their place. It was nice to see that some of his improvements around the house were working.

“Do we have time to stop for hot chocolate?” Kaia asked, buckling herself in.

“For you?” I said. “Always.”
